John Michael Bradford Wins the Seeking Satchmo Competition
This past weekend, August 3rd through 5th New Orleans saw the 12th annual Satchmo Summerfest, held at the U.S. Mint Museum. The festival featured a wide variety of traditional jazz, contemporary jazz, brass bands and children’s programming, all to honor the late, great Louis Armstrong. Among the fun over the weekend was the Seeking Satchmo Competition, a competition for middle school and high school trumpet players to honor Louis Armstrong and support the next generation of New Orleans musicians.
Among those to compete this weekend was the Preservation Hall Junior Jazz Band‘s own trumpeter John Michael Bradford, 16. Contestants had to perform sight reading exercises, as well as their own rendition of the Louis Armstrong classic, “Don’t Get Around Much No More.” The judges for the weekend were Delfeayo Marsalis, Herlin Riley, and Wendell Brunious. We are so happy to announce that John Michael came in first this weekend, winning a brand new B&S Trumpet. We cannot wait to see what else John Michael does in his musical career.
In the meantime, check out these photos of John Michael all throughout Satchmo Summerfest. He certainly made a splash, performing with the Treme Brass Band, Jeremy Davenport, as well as on the tribute to Louis Armstrong.
